What is Dual Inline Package (DIP)? The "Old Guard" in a High-Tech PCBA World

Date: 2026-04-04

If you’ve ever looked at a vintage computer or an industrial controller, you’ve seen them: those rectangular black chips with two rows of metal "legs" sticking out like a centipede. That, in plain English, is a Dual Inline Package (DIP).

While the world is obsessed with smaller, thinner HDI (High-Density Interconnect) boards and microscopic Surface Mount Devices (SMD), the DIP package refuses to retire. But why? And more importantly, if you are designing a modern Flexible PCB or a Rigid-Flex device, should you even care about DIP?

Let’s dive into what makes this "old-school" tech tick in 2026.

Breaking Down the DIP: What Exactly Is It?

A Dual Inline Package is a through-hole component package. It features a rectangular housing and two parallel rows of electrical connecting pins.

  • The Installation: These pins go through holes drilled in the PCB and are soldered on the opposite side.

  • The Spacing: Traditionally, the pins have a $2.54mm$ (0.1 inch) spacing, which is a dream for prototyping because they fit perfectly into breadboards.

Why Are We Still Using DIP in 2026?

You might think DIP is a dinosaur. However, in our PCBA facility, we still see DIP components every single day. Here is why they are still around:

  1. Mechanical Strength: Because the pins go through the board, DIP components are much harder to rip off than SMD parts. This is crucial for connectors or switches in heavy-duty industrial gear.

  2. Easy Replacement: If a chip fails in the field, a technician can often swap a DIP chip out of a socket without a soldering iron. Try doing that with a BGA on an HDI board!

  3. Prototyping: It’s still the "Gold Standard" for testing a new circuit before shrinking it down to a more complex layout.

The Challenge: Integrating DIP with Modern Flex and HDI Boards

As a specialist in custom Flexible PCBs and High-Speed HDI, this is where it gets interesting for us. Mixing old and new tech creates unique challenges:

  • The "Rigid" Problem on Flex: Putting a rigid DIP component on a Flexible PCB is tricky. If you don't use a proper stiffener (like FR4 or Polyimide), the legs of the DIP will eventually snap the copper traces when the board bends. We specialize in designing these "hybrid" zones to ensure your flex board survives the real world.

  • Space Management on HDI: HDI is all about saving space. A single DIP package takes up the room of about ten SMD equivalents. Our engineering team often helps clients optimize their BOM to decide which parts must be DIP for reliability and which should be converted to SMD to shrink the footprint.

Why Choose a Partner Who Understands Both Worlds?

Whether you are building a retro-style synthesizer or a cutting-edge aerospace sensor, you need a manufacturer that doesn't just "print boards."

At our China-based facility, we provide:

  • Full-Service PCBA: We handle everything from the latest high-frequency HDI laser-drilling to the manual soldering of specialized DIP components.

  • DFM (Design for Manufacturing) Review: We’ll look at your DIP placement and tell you if it's going to cause issues during the reflow process or affect the signal integrity of your high-speed lines.

  • Quality You Can Trust: Every joint, whether it's a microscopic SMD pad or a sturdy DIP pin, undergoes rigorous inspection (AOI and X-ray).

Ready to Bring Your Design to Life?

Don't let the choice of packaging hold you back. Whether you’re sticking with the reliability of Dual Inline Packages or pushing the limits with Rigid-Flex technology, we’re here to make it happen.
